KAZAN, Russia -- Following a successful run at the 2013 Phillips 66 U.S. and World Championship trials in Indianapolis, Ind., recent UW graduate Michael Weiss is taking his talents overseas, where he will compete for Team USA in the 2013 World University Games.
Weiss is joined at the World University Games by a former teammate and an incoming Badgers student-athlete. Dan Lester will represent Australia during the games, while newcomer Matt Hutchins will take to the waters for his native country of New Zealand.
For the first time, the World University Games will be available to a national television audience in the United States. ESPNU and ESPN3 are set to carry 115 live hours of the event, which features student-athletes aged 17-28. Swimming events will be broadcast live on ESPN3 July 10-16 beginning at 10:00 a.m. CT each day, while the women's diving platform (10-meter) synchronized final will air live on ESPN3 July 12 beginning at 4:50 a.m. CT.
Taking place every two years, the World University Games are an international multi-sport event organized for university athletes by the International Sports Federation (FISU). Swimmers on the 2013 World University Games Team roster were selected based upon their performance at the 2012 U.S. Open Championships. All athletes selected for the team must be at least 17 years old and less than 28 years old on January 1, 2013.
