KABUL - The Afghan Foreign Ministry said on Sunday the country's president will soon visit neighbouring Pakistan in an effort to mend fences, and said it hopes that the new government in Islamabad will seek to improve tense relations. Foreign Ministry spokesman Janan Mosazai told reporters that Hamid Karzai accepted an invitation delivered by Pakistan one week ago. He said Afghanistan hopes the newly elected government of Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif can open a new page in relations.
Relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan have been tense and Kabul has in the past charged that Islamabad has supported the Taliban in its fight against the government.
Meanwhile, President Hamid Karzai vehemently denounced twin explosions in Pakistan's northwestern tribal region of Kurram near the Afghanistan border.
At least 57 people were killed and over 180 others injured as a result of the back-to-back explosions, Pakistani officials said. In a statement issued from his office, President Karzai condemned the deadly assaults targeting fasting Muslims as an anti-Islam act that could not be justified in any way. According to the statement, the president extended his sincere condolences to the victims' families and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured.
