Just weeks after we put the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini through its paces, we're looking at the HTC One mini, another attempt to shrink a flagship down into a smaller (and cheaper) package. As you'd expect, the 4.3-inch mini looks much like the full-sized version, and that goes for both the hardware and software. In addition to its similar-looking aluminum-and-plastic frame you'll find both a 4-megapixel Ultrapixel camera sensor and HTC's Sense 5 UI, meaning automatic video highlights, Zoe and BlinkFeed all make an appearance here as well. There are, however, a few hardware drawbacks compared to the original, with the IR blaster, optical image stabilization on the camera and NFC stripped out for space- and cost-saving reasons. Can HTC launch a mid-range phone that won't get lost between similarly priced offerings and last year's discounted flagships? We'll try to reason that out after the break.

TOKYO?After months of much tension and little dialogue, Japan and China are edging gingerly toward repairing diplomatic relations, seeking ways to contain the fallout from a territorial row, even without any clear sign of how to resolve it.
Tokyo's highest-ranking career diplomat traveled to Beijing on Monday for two days of talks to "exchange opinions on a broad range of issues" with Chinese officials, Japan's chief government spokesman said. It was the first time for the foreign ministry's top official to meet with Chinese counterparts since October and the first such exchange since new, hard-line leaders have taken power in ...

Ford has confirmed it will enter the 2014 Dakar Rally through a collaborative effort spearheaded by its South African division.
The marque will enter two purpose-built Rangers, to be driven by Lucio Alvarez and Chris Visser.
Argentinean Alvarez came close to winning the opening stage of this year's rally and finished 10th overall for the Overdrive Toyota outfit, despite at one point dropping to 27th with mechanical issues.
Visser, the 2011 South African cross-country champion, will meanwhile be making his Dakar debut.
"We are extremely proud to be sending these South African-built Rangers to the 2014 Dakar," Jeff Nemeth, president and CEO of Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa, said.
"Dakar is the ultimate test of man and machine and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to participate with a phenomenal team comprised of local and global expertise."
The two Rangers will be prepared by Pietermaritzburg-based Neil Woolridge Motorsport (NVM), with assistance from Ford's global product development group.
One Ranger is already ready and will begin testing in August, while the second is set to be completed before the end of October.
The 2014 Dakar Rally will run from January 5-18, and will take in Bolivia for the first time.

This is pretty cool. Fox used the UFC Phantom Cam for Saturday night's fights to slow down some of the night's biggest strikes. In MMA, strikes can happen so quickly that you can't see their true effect except through photography. With super-slow-motion, you can see what a punch or a kick can really do to the human body.
Thanks, MMA Junkie.

A soldier from Northern California will receive the Medal of Honor for bravery during combat in Afghanistan, the White House announced Monday.
Staff Sgt. Ty Michael Carter will receive the medal from President Obama in a White House ceremony set for Aug. 26.
Carter, 33, is being recognized for bravery during a six-hour battle in Afghanistan's mountainous Nuristan province on Oct., 3, 2009. Eight U.S. soldiers were killed and 25 wounded as enemy fighters attempted, unsuccessfully, to overrun Combat Outpost Keating.
Carter risked his life to take ammunition to other soldiers and to provide first aid to a wounded soldier who was pinned down by enemy fire. He also killed several enemy fighters.
Carter was serving as a cavalry scout with the 4th Infantry Division's Bravo Troop, 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team. He is now with the 7th Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash. He completed a second deployment to Afghanistan in October.
Born in Spokane, Carter's family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area when he was barely a year old. Although his family moved back to Spokane a decade later, Carter continues to list Antioch in Contra Costa County, north of San Francisco, as his hometown.
Carter served in the Marine Corps from 1998 to 2002, including assignments in Egypt and San Clemente Island. After receiving an honorable discharge, he studied biology at Los Medanos Community College in Pittsburg, also in Contra Costa County.
In 2008 he enlisted in the Army. He and his wife have three children.

Track & Field
? Charlie Baker of Hixson continued his run of track and field gold medals in biennial National Senior Olympics competition with two golds and three bronzes this past week in Cleveland, but this year's success followed a light stroke on Jan. 5 and three months in which he was not allowed to run. Baker took gold in the men's 85-89 age group in long jump and the 400-meter relay, and he was third in the 50, the 400 and the high jump, giving him 16 medals in national seniors competition over the years. He added fourth-place 2013 ribbons in the 100 and 200.
? Tiana Mills already was planning to attend Carson-Newman University, but then came a better way to do it. In addition to taking classes at the NCAA Division II school in Jefferson City, Tenn., the 2013 Girls Preparatory School graduate will be on scholarship with the track and field team, along with Ooltewah long and triple jumper T.J. Davis, Ooltewah hurdler Phillip McClain and Arts & Sciences shot and discus thrower Christianna Smith. Two local recruits to the Eagles football team, Courtney Heard from CSAS (Tyner football) and Jamal Jones from Lookout Valley, also plan to help in track, according to Carson-Newman coach David Needs, who became the full-time director of tradk and field and cross country in June, giving up his longtime role as football quarterbacks coach as track becomes an official sport of the South Atlantic Conference. Needs saw Mills at the TSSAA Division II state meet in Murfreesboro, where she significantly surpassed her previous best long jump with a second-place leap of 18 feet, 1 inch. She was third in the discus with a toss of 101-10 and fifth in the triple jump at 34-1.5. GPS coach Stacey Hill said Mills has exceeded 115 feet in the discus and is capable of "going 39 or so" with continued work in the triple jump. "Tiana also ran the 4x200 relay for us," said Hill, who holds a Carson-Newman track record. "She's the kind of athlete who can step into their program and help quickly, I think, and they're obviously getting more serious about their program." Mills won the Division II East sectional in the long jump and discus and was second in the triple. She had picked Carson-Newman for academic and spiritual reasons, as well as its not-too-far distance from home, and planned to try club volleyball if she didn't walk on in track, "but it all worked out," she said. "I'm excited." In further showing its new attention to running, Carson-Newman recently hired two-time Olympian Jose "Tony" Parrilla, a former University of Tennessee standout, as its cross country head coach. CSAS's Smith was the shot put winner and discus runner-up in the Class A/AA sectional.

Baseball
? The North Georgia Chiefs Baseball Club playing out of Boynton recently won the Dizzy Dean Senior Division World Series in Southaven, Miss. The Chiefs lost their opening game, 2-0 to the East Alabama Canes, but then won five close games in a row for the championship. The Boynton bunch allowed opponents just over one run per game in the tournament behind pitchers Kevin Carr, Keith Pacmayer, Justin Garmany, Earl Dupree, Will Greer and Blane Swift. Swift also had a home run, two doubles and four RBIs in earning MVP honors. The Chiefs won 5-3 over JPRD of Louisiana, 2-0 over Grenada, Miss., 1-0 over the Florida Black Sox and 3-0 and 3-2 over the Canes, after a five-hour-plus rain delay before the championship series. The Canes took a 2-0 lead in the final, scoring on a balk and an obstruction call, but in the fifth inning pinch runner Dupree scored from first on a throwing error on Greer's sacrifice bunt and Greer then scored on a Steiner Davis grounder. In the seventh, Matthew Banks led off with a line-drive single for the Chiefs and took second on a wild pitch, and after a Hunter Davis walk Greer moved the runners up with another bunt and Zack Turner hit a sacrifice fly. Turner, Carr and Pacmayer joined Swift on the all-tournament team, and Turner, Davis, Dylan Simmons, Mason Hamilton and Micah Wyatt each had three hits and at least one RBI.

(Link to video: Dozens dead in Italian bus crash)Coach carrying a group of tourists near town of Avellino careered off a viaduct and plunged down a steep slope.
At least 37 people died and many others were injured when a coach carrying a group of tourists through southern Italy crashed into several vehicles, careered off a viaduct and then plunged down a steep slope.
As emergency workers contended with the dark and highly precarious terrain to try to pull bodies from the wreckage, firefighters said most of the bodies had been found inside the coach and a few more beneath the vehicle.
Eleven people - including three children - were injured and taken to hospitals in the surrounding area, the Ansa news agency reported. Two were reported to be in critical condition. State radio quoted Avellino police as saying the bus driver was among the dead.
"The situation is critical. Our men are working to save as many lives as possible," fire chief Pellegrino Iandolo told Sky TG24 television late on Sunday night.
? Reuters
Reports said as many as 49 people had been aboard the bus when it ripped through a guardrail after slamming into several cars, then plunged some 30 metres (100ft) off the highway and into a ravine near a wooded area. The bus tore away whole sections of concrete barriers as well as the guardrail. The concrete lay in large chunks in a clearing where the bus landed.
Television images showed a number of smashed vehicles on the flyover, bodies lying beside the road and the twisted wreckage of the coach lying dozens of metres below the roadside in the undergrowth.
? Reuters
The crash occured about 8.30pm local time between the towns of Baiano Monteforte Irpino, about 40 miles inland from Naples.
Flashing signs had warned of slowed traffic ahead along a stretch of the A16, highway police told state radio early on Monday. They said the bus driver, for reasons not yet determined, appeared to have lost control of his vehicle.
Reports said it hit several cars and then plunged off the viaduct. There was no obvious cause of the crash, but Ansa reported unnamed sources saying police believed there may have been a problem with the coach's braking mechanism.
? The Guardian
A reporter for Naples daily Il Mattino, Giuseppe Crimaldi, told Sky TG24 TV from the scene that some witnesses told him the bus had been going at a "normal" speed on the downhill stretch of the highway when it suddenly veered and started hitting cars. He said some witnesses thought they heard a noise as if the bus had blown a tyre.Early reports said the passengers had spent the day in Puglia, an area near the Adriatic on the east coast famed for religious shrines. But on Monday, a state radio reporter at the scene said authorities told him the bus had been bringing the passengers home after an outing to a thermal spa area near Benevento, not far from Avellino.
Others at the scene said the passengers might have visited a town near Benevento that was the early home of Padre Pio, a late mystic monk highly popular among Catholics in Italy.
Passengers came from small towns near Naples, and relatives streamed to the crash site. Initial estimates said there were up to 49 people on board at the time of the accident.
A local prosecutor arrived at the crash scene to begin an investigation into the cause of the crash.
