Hagel says legal immunity key in Afghanisan

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Chuck Hagel, President Barack Obama's nominee to be the next secretary of defense, says it will be important to protect from potential Afghan prosecution any American troops who remain there after the allied combat mission ends in 2014.

Hagel made the remark Thursday during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Hagel was asked about Obama's pending decision on how many troops -- if any -- to keep in Afghanistan after 2014. He said that as of Thursday Obama had not made a decision. One factor Obama is considering is whether the Afghan government will agree to give U.S. troops immunity from prosecution under Afghan laws.
