HAMDEN, Conn. ? Quinnipiac University in Connecticut is opening a museum dedicated to the Irish famine.
College officials say Ireland?s Great Hunger Museum has the world?s largest collection of visual art, artifacts and printed materials related to the famine. It?s set to open to the public on Oct. 11 on campus in Hamden.
The collection focuses on the famine years from 1845 to 1852, when blight destroyed virtually all of Ireland?s potato crops. More than 1 million died and about 2 million emigrated to the United States and other countries.
Quinnipiac President John Lahey, the former grand marshal of the New York City St. Patrick?s Day parade, predicts the museum will be a large draw for Irish-Americans and others.

KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) ? A plane carrying trekkers to the Mount Everest region hit a bird and crashed just after takeoff Friday in Nepal's capital, killing the 19 Nepali, British and Chinese people on board, authorities said.
The pilot of the domestic Sita Air flight reported trouble two minutes after takeoff and appeared to have been trying to turn back, said Katmandu airport official Ratish Chandra Suman. The crash site is only 500 meters (547 yards) from the airport, and the wrecked plane was pointing toward the airport area. Suman said the plane hit a vulture just after it took off, causing the crash.
Suman said he could not confirm whether the plane was already on fire before it crashed. Cellphone video shot by locals showed that the front section of the plane was on fire when it first hit the ground and that the pilot apparently had attempted to land the plane on open ground beside a river.
The fire quickly spread to the rear, but the tail was still in one piece at the scene near the Manohara River on the southwest edge of Katmandu. Villagers were unable to approach the plane because of the fire, and it took some time for firefighters to reach the area and bring the fire under control.
Soldiers and police sifted through the crash wreckage looking for bodies and documents to help identify the victims. Seven passengers were British and five were Chinese; the other four passengers and the three crew members were from Nepal, authorities said.
Large numbers of local people and security forces gathered at the crash site. The victims' charred bodies were taken by vans to a hospital morgue.
Relatives of the Nepalese victims cried as they gathered at the Tribhuwan University Teaching Hospital in Katmandu, where all the victims' bodies were taken.
The weather in Katmandu and surrounding areas was clear Friday morning, and the plane was one of the first of the day to take off from Katmandu's Tribhuwan International Airport. Other flights reported no problems, and the airport remained open and operated normally after the crash.
The plane was heading for Lukla, the gateway to Mount Everest. Thousands of Westerners make treks in the region around the world's highest peak each year. Autumn is considered the best time to trek the foothills of the Himalayan peaks.
Airline officials identified the British crash victims as Raymond Eagle, 58, Christopher Franc Davey, 51, Vincent Kelly, 52, Darren Kelly, 45, Timothy Oakes, 57, Stephen Holding, 60, and Benjamin Ogden, 27.
The Nepalese passengers were identified as Kumar Marshyangdi Magar, Lakpa Noru Sherpa, D. Rai and M.K. Tamang. The crew members were pilot Bijay Tandukar, co-pilot Takashi Thapa and hostess Ruju Shakya.
China's government-run Xinhua News Agency identified the Chinese victims as Wu-Hui, Qian-Mingwu, Wu-Lin, Wang-Jhihua and Yang-Chen.
Nepal, with its poor-quality mountain roads and network of little airports, has a long history of small plane crashes. Including Friday's crash, there have been at least six crashes of small planes since October 2008.
The crash follows an avalanche on another Nepal peak Sunday that killed seven foreign climbers and a Nepali guide.

The Vatican is opening its doors Saturday on one of the most embarrassing scandals of Pope Benedict XVI?s papacy, with the trial beginning for the pope?s former butler who is charged with allegedly stealing and leaking papal correspondence to a journalist.
Paolo Gabriele, who has already confessed to the crime, has stated that he was trying shed light on what he called the ?evil and corruption? in the church. His testimony revealed a cloak-and-dagger politics operating in the world?s smallest state.
Gabriele, a 46-year-old father of three, faces up to four years in prison if convicted.
FRANCE24?s correspondent in Rome, Seema Gupta, voiced the Vatican?s shock at this ?serious breach of security?.
|
Gabriele, who was replaced as papal butler after his arrest in late May, is accused of taking the pope?s correspondences, photocopying the documents and handing them to Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi, whose book ?His Holiness: The secret papers of Pope Benedict XVI,? was published in a blaze of publicity in May.
The most damaging letter reproduced in the book was written by the former No. 2 Vatican administrator to the pope, in which he begged not to be transferred as punishment for exposing alleged corruption in the awarding of Vatican contracts. The prelate, Monsignor Carlo Maria Vigano, is now the Vatican?s US ambassador.
?Fear? kept people quiet
"There is a kind of omerta against the truth, not so much because of a power struggle but because of fear, because of caution," Gabriele said in the only recorded interview with the journalist, using the term for the code of silence of the Sicilian mafia.
Gabriele told Nuzzi there were "around 20" like-minded people in the Vatican. "It annoys people when you stick your nose in their dirty laundry," he said, adding that the leaking of documents was "a gesture of rage" against inaction. "There is a lot of hypocrisy, this is the kingdom of hypocrisy," he said.
Many question, however, whether this conspiracy is just the tip of the iceberg and whether there could be more senior disgruntled Vatican employees working with Gabriele.
Gabriele said he was aware of the consequences of his actions but said the potential to change something in the Vatican was worth the risk.
Gabriele told investigators he was acting as an "agent" of the Holy Spirit to help the pope put a weary Catholic Church back on track.
The Vatican has said the 85-year-old German pope is deeply hurt by the betrayal of confidence by someone he "knew, loved and respected".
Gabriele has written a letter begging the pope for forgiveness, something Vatican watchers say is a given if he is convicted.
While the Holy See has seen its fair share of sensational trials - in 1600 Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake after being condemned by a Vatican court for heresy - this is the most high-profile case to come before the three-judge panel since the creation of the Vatican City state in 1929.
Gabriele spent entire life in the church
Gabriele has spent his entire adult life as a Vatican servant, starting out as a cleaner at the Secretariat of State -- the main administrative body of the Catholic Church -- and becoming butler to the pope in 2006.
He served the pope his meals and clothed him and is a constant presence in official photographs, adjusting the pope's cloak, holding his umbrella or riding him on the "popemobile" through crowds on foreign trips.
Vatican gendarmes arrested Gabriele and raided his home behind the Vatican walls, finding copies of confidential documents and gifts intended for the pope including a gold nugget and a 100,000-euro ($129,000) cheque.
Gabriele, one of only 594 citizens of the Vatican, was well known and generally liked in the tight-knit community that inhabitants the historic city.
Gabriele is being tried together with Claudio Sciarpelletti, a Vatican computer technician at the Vatican who is accused of abetting his crime.
No oaths are taken at the start of the trial, as the Vatican legal system, like the Italian one on which it is based, assumes a suspect may lie for self-protection. A judge reads aloud the charges against Gabriele, the defence can raise objections and both sides can enter their witness lists.
The length of the trial will depend in large part on the number of objections to the indictment and witness lists.
The pope addressed the scandal for the first time a week after Gabriele was arrested, saying the news had ?brought sadness in my heart.? He added: ?I want to renew my trust in and encouragement of my closest collaborators and all those who every day, with loyalty and a spirit of sacrifice and in silence, help me fulfill my ministry.?

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Phil Orlins knows everything about producing TV in three dimensions. The ESPN producer has captured the undulating greens of Augusta National and the flying motor bikes of the X-Games for ESPN's 3-D channel. But he can only guess how well his shows resonate with viewers. That's because 3-D audiences are so small they can't be measured by Nielsen's rating system.
"The feedback on The Masters was fast and furious. You could go on Twitter at any moment, and there'd be comments coming in every minute about 3-D coverage," said Orlins while giving a tour of a production truck at this summer's X-Games. "But then you go to some other events where it's pretty quiet."
Orlins' problem is that fewer than 115,000 American homes are tuned into 3-D channels at any one time. That's less than a hundredth of the 20.2 million-strong audience that saw television's highest-rated show "NCIS" this week. 3-D viewership is so small that The Nielsen Co.'s measurement methods are unable to capture its size.
ESPN 3D is one of nine 3-D channels that launched in the years following the late 2009 release of James Cameron's "Avatar." The 3-D blockbuster won three Oscars and ranks as the highest-grossing film of all time, garnering $2.8 billion at the global box office.
"Avatar" was supposed to change everything. Enthusiastic television executives expected the movie to spur 3-D's transition to American living rooms, boosting sales of new TVs and giving people a reason to pay more for 3-D channels.
That didn't happen.
Only 2 percent of TVs in the U.S. are able to show 3-D programming, according to the most recent data from research firm IHS Screen Digest. That's about 6.9 million sets out of 331 million. After this year's Christmas buying rush, IHS expects the number of 3-D-capable televisions installed in homes to jump to 19.3 million, mostly because 3-D viewing technology is being built into most new large-screen TVs. But even with the jump, 3-D TVs will amount to less than 6 percent of all sets.
"We've learned with every passing day that we were ahead of the curve further than we thought we were," said Bryan Burns, the business leader for ESPN 3D. "We hit the on-ramp earlier than we realized at the time."
Why 3-D television hasn't become a national craze is a mystery to some in the industry, considering the wide acceptance of 3-D movies at theaters. But 3-D content is expensive to produce, and as a result there's not a lot of it. Some of the content isn't very good. Some people find the special glasses required for 3-D TV uncomfortable. And many wonder whether it's worth the extra cost.
"It was kind of fascinating to me, but it's not all there," said Tim Carter, a graphic designer in Sarasota, Fla., who bought a large, high-end 3-D TV with other high-end features last year for about $1,800.
Today, the average 42-inch 3-D television costs about $900, according to IHS. They contain a high-tech chip and software that translates 3-D video feeds into the right- and left-eye images that create the 3-D effect for people wearing the right glasses. In some cases, special glasses can cost an extra $50 or so.
Watching home movies on disc requires a 3-D Blu-ray player that can cost another $120 and each disc set purchase runs around $27, according to IHS. (3-D movies are usually bundled with other discs.)
While operators like DirecTV and Comcast Corp. don't charge specifically for channels like ESPN 3D, they are generally bundled in packages that require other spending. At DirecTV that means a $200 high-definition digital video recorder and $10 per month for HD service. For Comcast, that means a minimum $65-per-month digital starter package with HD service costing another $10 a month.
All that for the privilege of watching 3-D at home in your pajamas.
Due to the cost, Carter said he's mainly sampled free 3-D movie trailers provided on-demand by his cable TV company. A trailer for the latest "Transformers" movie didn't make him more enthused. "One of the robots pops out at you, and it felt forced." ''It's not consistent," he said, noting that 3-D effects aren't noticeable much of the time. He said he's not knocking the technology, he's just disappointed with the way it's being used.
Nowadays, 3-D is just one feature on TVs with bigger screens. It is usually grouped with other upgrades that include motion-smoothing technology and light-emitting diodes that are smaller, more energy efficient and display color contrast better than traditional liquid crystal display sets. It's difficult to isolate how much 3-D adds to the price tag of an individual set because of this bundling, but according to IHS the average 42-inch set with 3-D is about $200 more than a similar-sized one without. Some 3-D TVs, however, can be found for cheaper than others of the same size.
"There's very little direct consumer demand," said Tom Morrod, a TV technology analyst with IHS in London. Some consumers buy TVs which happen to have 3-D, but they don't bother to get the glasses needed to watch them, he said.
"They don't see a value with it. Consumers associate value right now with screen size and very few other features."
Sluggish demand for 3-D on TV has caused programmers to hit pause on rolling out new shows and channels.
In June, DirecTV turned its 24-hour channel, n3D, into a part-time network that only shows special event programming like the Olympics, in part to avoid the heavy use of reruns caused by a lack of new material. Last year, AT&T dropped ESPN 3D from its lineup, saying the $10 per month cost to subscribers wasn't justified given low demand.
So far, ESPN 3D is the most aggressive network in terms of shooting original 3-D productions. It has about 140 per year. It also has the widest distribution, according to research firm SNL Kagan, no doubt because popular sports network ESPN includes it in negotiations with distributors. Though few own the hardware to watch the channel, ESPN 3D now pipes into 60 million U.S. homes.
Without extra subscriber fees, it could be difficult to make a big business out of 3-D production, especially because it's more expensive than 2-D. Every 3-D camera set-up requires two cameras. They have to be mounted on a special computerized rig that aligns them. And someone in a back room has to adjust a knob that determines how cross-eyed the lenses are. That can require twice the manpower for the same camera position, boosting costs when revenues aren't going up very much.
Advertising, the other pillar of the TV channel business, is also hampered because of the lack of audience data.
That has resulted in an odd arrangement. Companies that run advertisements on ESPN 3D, like movie studios, actually have their ads played a second time in 2-D on ESPN and other channels so they can meet their goal of reaching a measurable number of people, Burns said. That uses up 2-D commercial airtime that might have been sold to other customers.
While he wouldn't say if it's profitable, Burns said ESPN 3D is still a revenue-generating business that is "doing well," because of how the network accounts for revenue from distributors and advertisers.
3-D TV is not a complete bust. Burns and others expect that as more TVs are sold with the capability, the more viewership will grow, just like it did for high-definition sets and programs a few years ago.
"It took five years before reporting systems caught up and we knew who actually had the service," Burns said of the launch of HD. "It's not unfamiliar territory to us. We've been down this road before."
For TV signal providers, carrying 3-D channels before they really become mainstream wins them points with their savviest technophile customers, the kind who jumped on the HD bandwagon early ?a decade ago.
In many ways, though, the comparison to HD isn't a good one.
Watching 3-D is a problem for about 6 percent of Americans with certain eye problems, according to Dr. David Maino, a professor with the Illinois College of Optometry. They simply can't see in 3-D or suffer dizziness or nausea when watching.
And it won't get the same push that HD got by the hundreds of TV stations that switched to high-definition broadcasts in the last few years. Nor will it benefit from the nation's switch from analog to digital TV broadcasts in 2009.
Another awkward point: some people just don't like 3-D. In a phone survey last November of 1,300 Americans who had seen 3-D TV, Leichtman Research Group found that 38 percent rated it poorly at 3 or below on a scale of 10. That's twice as many as rated it excellently, at 8 or higher.
That's a knock against 3-D that HD didn't have.
"It's one of those examples where seeing isn't believing, thus far," said Bruce Leichtman, president of Leichtman Research. "That's certainly not a great place to start."

RIM may have given us hope that its transition to BlackBerry 10 has turned a corner, but that doesn't mean the dark clouds have entirely broken just yet. The company's second fiscal quarter saw it generate $2.9 billion in revenue, a slight gain over last quarter, while it posted a net loss of $235 million -- again better than expected, but not the best news it could deliver. Waterloo's main challenge was holding on to its smartphone base. While RIM did expand the total BlackBerry user base to 80 million, its phone shipments dropped from 7.8 million to 7.4 million and were braced by shipments of just 130,000 PlayBooks, or half as many tablets as were delivered in the spring.
The sunshine is mostly found in the total picture. RIM says it's still on track to deliver the first BlackBerry 10 phones in early 2013; while the smartphone maker is bracing for an operating loss in its ongoing third quarter, the higher revenue and reduced losses suggest to CEO Thorsten Heins that RIM is getting its fiscal house in order before BlackBerry 10 (hopefully) renews interest. Full details of the company's financial performance are available after the break.

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Most Pennsylvania voters give Governor Tom Corbett less than stellar marks for his investigation, as state attorney general, of reports Jerry Sandusky was sexually abusing children, a poll showed on Wednesday.
Only 17 percent of the state's voters think Corbett, who served as Pennsylvania's top prosecutor for two terms before becoming governor in 2011, did a good or excellent job investigating what later erupted as a scandal at Penn State University, according to the Franklin & Marshall College Poll.
Some 65 percent said Corbett did a fair or poor job on the case which led to the conviction in June of Sandusky, a former assistant football coach at Penn State, for sexually abusing 10 boys over 15 years.
G. Terry Madonna, the poll director, said three factors led to the low approval rating: a sense Corbett did not move the grand jury investigation fast enough, a sense he did not put enough manpower on the probe, and questions about Corbett's role later filling a seat on Penn State's board of trustees that is set aside for the governor.
"There is some residual fallout," said Madonna. "The prospects that this will be over any time soon are not very good."
Kevin Harley, Corbett's press secretary, defended the governor's record on the Sandusky case.
"I would say the verdict of 45 (convictions) on 48 counts is a complete vindication of the thoroughness of the investigation," Harley said.
The scandal will dominate headlines in coming months. Sandusky is scheduled for sentencing on October 9 when Victim 5 will testify according to local media. A series of civil lawsuits is expected to be filed by victims.
In January, two former Penn State officials face trial on charges they lied to a grand jury about the crime. A separate report criticized school leaders for staging a coverup to avoid bad publicity.
Madonna said he doubted that widely published reports that Corbett received campaign contributions totaling some $647,000 from people associated with Sandusky's now defunct charity, The Second Mile, had much to do with the dim poll results.
"Most people don't know that," Madonna said.
Harley, said the donation total was vastly inflated in media reports, putting it closer to $40,000.
"Completely, completely, completely false," said Madonna, noting the higher total included contributions from people only distantly linked to Second Mile, the charity for at-risk youth that prosecutors said Sandusky used to find victims.
The telephone poll of 632 Pennsylvania voters, conducted September 18-23, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.9 percent.

A Texas mother is furious that male vice principal left her daughter bruised and blistered after a spanking, which the girl opted for over another day of in-school suspension for cheating in class.
Taylor Santos, a sophomore at Springtown High School, northwest of Fort Worth, Texas, told school officials?that she didn?t know another student had copied her classwork, but school officials gave both girls two days of in-school suspension as punishment.
After serving one day, Taylor said she didn?t want to miss any more classes, so she went to the vice principal?s office and opted instead for a paddling ? a legal form of punishment in schools in Texas and 19 other states,?according to the?Center for Effective Discipline.?
Because school policy says spanking or paddling requires that parents give permission, the vice principal had Taylor call her mother, Anna Jorgensen, who gave her approval.
"I knew school policy was females swatted females and males swatted males,? Jorgensen told WFAA-TV in Dallas-Fort Worth.??If Taylor wanted that, I said that would be fine.?
Stay informed with the latest headlines; sign up for our newsletter
But what happened instead was the vice principal himself swatted Taylor while a woman was present in the room, despite school policy that states ?corporal punishment shall be administered only by an employee who is the same sex as the student."?
After learning who did the spanking and seeing the wounds on her daughter's body, Jorgensen said she was horrified.
"I came unglued," Jorgensen said. ?It looked almost like it had been burned and blistered, it was so bad,? she said of her daughter?s bottom, adding that she took photos of injuries to prove how red they were.
Jorgensen called the vice principal to complain, but he told her it was perfectly normal for her daughter?s bottom to look like that. He reportedly added that he wasn?t aware of the school?s same-sex swatting policy.
Watch the most-viewed videos on NBCNews.com
Springtown Superintendent Mike Kelley told WFAA that school officials never administer corporal punishment unless a parent requests it. While he declined to speak on Taylor?s case specifically, he stressed that two adults are always present when corporal punishment is administered, but he said the school district may have made an error.
WFAA reported that Kelly wants to do away with the current policy because the male-to-female ratio of administrators at the school makes it a difficult policy to adhere to. He will reportedly ask the school board to get rid of the same gender requirement at a board meeting Monday.?
For her part, Jorgensen said she will be in attendance at that meeting to urge the school board to keep the gender-based policy.
"I think Taylor is proof that we need to keep that policy," Jorgensen said. "I don't believe a man intentionally meant to do that to her, but it still happens, because men are too big and strong to be hitting 96-pound girls."
More than 220,000 school children nationwide were subjected to physical punishment during the 2005-2006 school year, according to the Center for Effective Discipline, citing the most recent figures available.
At one school in Florida,?the woodshop class at?Holmes County High School?actually makes the paddles used to spank any of the more than 500 students.?
In another Florida town, east of Tallahassee, townfolkd make paddles out of plexiglass for?Madison?County Central's elementary and middle school, the dean of schools said.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran has test-fired four missiles designed to hit warships during a drill near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, an Iranian military commander said.
The missiles were fired simultaneously and hit a "big target" the size of a warship, sinking it within 50 seconds, Gen. Ali Fadavi of the powerful Revolutionary Guard was quoted as saying by the semi-official Fars news agency.
The Fars report late Monday was the first indication of an Iranian military exercise taking place simultaneously and close to U.S.-led joint naval maneuvers in the Persian Gulf, including mine-sweeping drills, which got under way last week.
The U.S. Navy claims the maneuvers are not directly aimed at Iran, but the West and its regional allies have made clear they would react against attempts by Tehran to carry out threats to try to close critical Gulf oil shipping lanes in retaliation for tighter sanctions over its disputed nuclear program.
Fadavi did not elaborate on the ongoing Iranian exercise or the type of missiles fired but said the Guard is planning a "massive naval maneuver in the near future" in the strait.
Iran regularly holds maneuvers to upgrade its military readiness as well as test its equipment.
The latest drill comes amid tension over Iran's nuclear program and Israel's suggestion that it might unilaterally strike Iranian nuclear facilities to scuttle what the U.S. and its allies believe are efforts to build an atomic bomb.
Tehran denies it is pursuing such weapons and insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.
On Sunday, a senior Guard commander warned that Iran would target U.S. bases in the region in the event of war with Israel. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, who heads the Guard's aerospace division, claimed no Israeli attack can happen without the support of its most important ally, the United States, making all U.S. military bases a legitimate target.
Iran has in the past also warned that oil shipments through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the route for a fifth of the world's oil, will be in jeopardy if a war breaks out.
For its part, Israel believes that any attack on Iran would likely unleash retaliation in the form of Iranian missiles as well as rocket attacks by Iranian proxies Hezbollah and Hamas on its northern and southern borders.

J.K. Rowling's new book for adults is highly anticipated, and adult content in the books shows it's no Potter do-over, though similar themes echo in 'Vacancy.'

And third and fourth, it seems. The once-single mother who survived on welfare, then struck platinum-status with her seven-book series on the magical world of Harry Potter has reinvented herself again, this time as a novelist for an entirely new audience ? adults.?
Rowling?s post-Harry era begins Sept. 27 with the release of ?The Casual Vacancy.? The new novel is a 512-page tale of class warfare, morality, and small town politics set in an idyllic fictional English village.
The question on everyone?s mind: Whether Rowling can successfully crossover from her stratospherically triumphant reign as a children?s author and creator of the 450-million-selling Potter books, which made her net worth almost $900 million and set the bar for forthcoming books frighteningly high, to well-received adult novelist.
This much is clear: ?The Casual Vacancy? is no ?Harry Potter? and Rowling, thankfully, makes no apologies for this decidedly different track. Set in the fictional English village of Pagford, the book begins as a ?rural comedy of manners? that builds into a portrayal of class warfare, strewn throughout with treatises on social welfare. Following the death of Pagford council member Barry Fairbrother, the well-heeled town is pitched into a divisive battle about its connection to Fields, a neighboring town characterized by its public housing and poverty. Historically, Pagford extended a hand to Fields ? children from Fields could attend primary school in Pagford (?a place of flower baskets and other middle-class comforts) and the town also ran a drug-treatment clinic that served many in Fields. But with the death of council member Fairbrother, Pagford?s ?anti-Fields faction sees an opportunity to rid Pagford of this burden.?
After reading the 512-page novel and interviewing the famously reserved Rowling, writer Ian Parker shared his thoughts in a 10,000-word feature in the New Yorker.?
?Within a few pages, it was clear that the novel had not been written for children,? Parker writes. ?The Casual Vacancy,? after all, is a tale of ?class warfare set amid semi-rural poverty, heroin addiction, and teenage perplexity and sexuality.?
??But reviewers looking for echoes of the Harry Potter series will find them. ?The Causal Vacancy? describes young people coming of age in a place divided by warring factions, and the deceased council member, Barry Fairbrother ? who dies in the first chapter but remains the story?s moral center ? had the same virtues, in his world, that Harry had in his ? tolerance, constancy, a willingness to act.?
Even Rowling found similar themes. ?I think there?is?a through-line,? the author told Parker of the New Yorker. ?Mortality, morality, the two things that I obsess about.?
But, by most accounts, the similarities end there. For those accustomed to Rowling?s more traditional, buttoned-up children?s fare, ?The Casual Vacancy? is most certainly not that.
There?s this: ?The leathery skin of her upper cleavage radiated little cracks that no longer vanished when decompressed.? And this, about a lustful little boy who sits on a school bus ?with an ache in his heart and in his balls.?

Florida State led Clemson by the final 49-37 margin in the waning moments of its statement win on Saturday night. Then the 'Noles tried a trick play for some reason, only to have karma rudely remind them to stay humble.
Apparently, Bryan Stork was supposed to hold onto the ball, or at least set up some sort of sleight of hand with E.J. Manuel, but the flags flew for a false start, and Manuel and Stork just ended up staring into each other's eyes.
One suspects that Stork jamming the ball into Manuel's stomach, perhaps protesting how the play failed, will not be quite as amusing for Clemson fans.

One of the major things that happens here at the Hearth of the Hunter (aka my home) is that our family's altar turns into specifically a larger version of our Ancestral Altar which is out all year long but take primary the focus on a much larger scale.
Being sick this past year has made me focus a lot more on when my time comes how I want to be remembered. ?These past few years I was blessed by the Goddess to make friends with a wonderful woman I consider a sister. ?Her name is Nora Cedarwind Young. ?She has been a mentor to me, a friend, and someone who has taught me many things. ?One of the things she has taught me is what I am going to share with you know.
You see, Nora is a Death Midwife. ?Her business is giving those who want them the tools to learn about dying with dignity within their home. ?Teaching their family members what needs to be done to preserve the body, what forms are legally necessary plus many other important and valuable tools. ?For more information about what it is she does, please visit her website Thresholds of Life.
One of the main exercises that Nora taught me is how do you want to be remembered? ?When I first met her I was no way sick, and never thought about what would happen if I died. ?In her class I took at PSG in 2008 when I first met her transformed my life. ?Every year, during Samhain, I sit at my dining room table and pull out a notebook that contains my thoughts on what I want done when I die. ?This includes many information such as my wishes to be an organ donate, what items I possess to be gifted to those I love, right down to what music I want performed at my burial to whom I want to perform it (you reading this Wayland Raven???).
After I review what I have written in the past, its time to make any corrections in my wishes that may have changed since last year as well as my yearly writing ritual of writing my own?Obituary. ?Yep you read that right, I write my own Obituary. ?Every year things happen in our lives, some good (like the possibility of more children) and some bad (being?preceded?in death by a loved one). ?Accomplishments can happen that one might want to be recognized for should the Goddess call me back into the Earth that we might want others to acknowledge us for when we pass on into the Summerland or while we are gone until we return again.
One of the websites I like to use look at when I prepare for my yearly writing is?http://www.obituaryguide.com/. ?There is a section that talks about a life using only six words.
One of the phrases I like is??I coloured outside of the lines.? ?There are even a few books about the subject as well on Amazon.
This year for Samhain, I hope you join me in creating a new tradition for yourself if you are not doing it already. ?In addition to honoring your Ancestors, write your own Obituary and honor yourself as well.
Blessed Be from,
Crystal T.

BETA blockers are a type of hypertension medicine. Oh... you have hypertension? There are many factors that can cause high blood pressure. Heredity, lifestyle, diet, exercise, weight all have an effect on a persons blood pressure.
From experience, doctors will tell you the contributing factors, then prescribe medicine to lower blood pressure. Sometimes... more than one medicine is required.
There are a whole range of hypertension medicines available and... they don't all work the same. I know of 2 different families of hypertension medicines. BETA blockers and Calcium Channel Blockers. Sometimes lower doses of two different families is better than a large dose of one.
Supplemental medicines are often required to help with hypertension medicines. For example, some can regulate heart rate allowing the heart to slow down, some increase urination and that helps rid the body of sodium... Water retainage is also a factor in blood pressure.
On the weekends, especially If I'm working in the yard, I'll cut back on blood pressure medicine as the high exercise, reduced stress lowers my pressure without medicine. That said... if I were a fitness instructor, I'd probably do away with hypertension medicine entirely.
Something to consider.

First lady Michelle Obama addresses the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's 42nd Annual Phoenix Awards dinner in Washington, Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012. (AP Photo/Cliff Owen)
WASHINGTON ? Michelle Obama says protecting the right to vote has become the nation's most important civil rights issue.
The first lady tells a gathering of black lawmakers and leaders that they owe it to those who fought and died for equal rights in the 1960s to make sure every voter can freely cast a ballot.
Her comments at an annual awards banquet for the Congressional Black Caucus come amidst a push in more than a dozen states to pass laws requiring voters to show ID at the polls. Critics say the laws unfairly harm minorities, poor people and college students ? all groups that tend to vote Democratic.
Comparing it to the civil rights movement, Obama calls voting rights "the march or our time" and "the sit in of our day."

In the meantime, let?s take a moment to enjoy her fabulous silver strapless dress that she wore last night for the pre-Emmy parties. Julie slipped on this metallic embellished cocktail number from the Fall 2012 Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti collection.
The dress is pretty overall, but I like the studded detailing covering the bodice and scattered about throughout the design.
She accessorized with silver as well, including a Jimmy Choo ?Tube? clutch and a pair of matching open toe platform ?Yvesse? pumps by Brian Atwood. This look was complete with diamond jewelry and a soft curl to her blonde tresses.

Genetic analyses found herbs similar to black cohosh were being sold in commercial preparations of the popular remedy, possibly explaining mixed results and casting doubt on supplement label accuracy
By Katherine Harmon
A pure pill? Some black cohosh pills sequenced did not contain black cohosh at all, but rather entirely different plant species. Image: iStockphoto/OlgaMiltsova
When hormone replacement therapy was found to put some menopausal women at increased risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease, many went in search of safer treatments to decrease their symptoms. In the ensuing decade black cohosh has won out as an overwhelming consumer favorite, now reaping millions of dollars in sales each year.
But controlled trials of this supplement have seen mixed results, sometimes showing it to be effective in relieving hot flashes, sleep disruptions, mood swings and other symptoms whereas other times revealing it to be ineffective. And some case reports even suggest that it can be toxic, damaging the liver.
This messy track record gave Damon Little, a bioinformaticist at The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG), and his colleagues an idea: What if patients?in these trials and out in the community?were not always taking pure, actual black cohosh (Actaea racemosa), but one or more related species? Fortunately, they had just the tool on hand to figure that out: DNA barcoding.
Using this technology, which locates and sequences specific areas of a plant's genome (specifically, two matK gene nucleotides), they were able to determine that one quarter of commercially available "black cohosh" pills were not the herb at all. Their findings were published this July in the Journal of AOAC International.
"Misidentification and adulteration in black cohosh supplements [has been] known for many years as a matter of concern," notes Rolf Teschke, an internist at the Teaching Hospital of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt and who was not involved in the new research. "The present study confirms?but extends?previous findings."
Unlike drugs, however, supplements are not required to be tested for safety or efficacy by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration before they hit the market. And testing to make sure the contents match the label are much more lax than it is for pharmaceuticals, opening the opportunity for mislabeling, whether it is accidental or intentional.
Wild roots
Black cohosh has been used traditionally by Native Americans as a natural remedy for a variety of ailments. It is often harvested in the wild, where it grows in similar environments to many of its close cousins that look very similar. And some species of Actaea are suspected to be toxic to humans. "Unless you're looking very carefully, you can't assume that any black cohoshlike thing is actually black cohosh," Little says. In eastern North America, where black cohosh grows, it is not uncommon to also find yellow cohosh (A. pachypoda and A. podocarpa) and baneberry (A. spicata and A. rubra). During harvesting, the rhizomes (buried stems) are often collected and then ground up to make the supplements, leaving telling botanical clues, such as leaf shape, forever lost.
In recent years, with the vast increase in the herb's sales, commercial growing operations have also sprung up in North America as well as Europe and Asia.
David Baker, a gynecologist at Stony Brook University Medical Center, had many patients who took black cohosh, but he was intrigued by the ambiguity of the medical literature on the supplement. So he, Little and their colleague at the NYBG, Dennis Stevenson, wanted to see if all of these pills labeled as black cohosh were, indeed the correct species.

(CNSNews.com) ? The White House?s refusal to release communications related to the Fast and Furious gun-walking program and the refusal of a White House official to be interviewed about the matter ?made it impossible? for the inspector general (IG) of the Justice Department to ?pursue that aspect of the case,? the IG, Michael Horowitz, testified.
He added that the sought-after White House interview and communications constituted ?a lead we wanted to follow.?
At a hearing of the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee on Thursday, Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-Tex.) asked Horowitz, ?You noted also in your report that the White House refused to share internal communications with you during your investigation of Fast and Furious. We?ve noted a connection into the White House through Kevin O?Reilly at the National Security Council.? Do you think the White House?s refusal to share these documents limited the scope of your investigation? Would this committee be well served by pursuing an investigation into that avenue??
Horowitz answered, ?Well, as we noted in the report, and as you know, congressman, we did not get internal communications from the White House and Mr. O?Reilly?s unwillingness to speak to us made it impossible for us to pursue that angle of the case and the question that had been raised.?
Farenthold: ?So it would probably be worthwhile for us to pursue??
Horowitz: ?Well, certainly we have sought to pursue every lead we could. So, I can tell you, from our standpoint it was a lead we wanted to follow.?
The report, A Review of ATF?s Operation Fast and Furious and Related Matters, was released yesterday by the office of the inspector general.
Mr. O?Reilly is Kevin O?Reilly and when Fast and Furious was in operation he was a member of President Barack Obama?s National Security Staff.
The IG report states, ?We also sought to interview Kevin O?Reilly, an official with the White House National Security Staff, about communications he had in 2010 with Special Agent in Charge William Newell that included information about Operation Fast and Furious. O?Reilly declined through his personal counsel our request for an interview.?
Bill Newell was the ATF Special Agent in Charge for the Phoenix, Ariz., office that was running Operation Fast and Furious.
The IG report says, ?We sought to interview O?Reilly in light of e-mail communications he had with Special Agent in Charge Bill Newell in 2010.?
