Some Exhibits at Natural History Museum Are Only Seen by Researchers

Michael Nagle for The New York Times

COLD STORAGE At the American Museum of Natural History, George Amato reached into a vat, cooled by liquid nitrogen, holding vials of tissue samples.

George Amato climbs a step and lifts the lid on a shiny stainless steel vessel that is basically a tall, portly thermos bottle. Clouds swirl off liquid nitrogen inside, making the tank look like a high-tech witch?s caldron.

This vessel and the others in the room hold some of the least-imposing exhibits in the American Museum of Natural History, the sprawling, 143-year-old complex on Manhattan?s Upper West Side.

Inside the vessels are tall racks that hold small boxes; each box contains dozens of plastic vials; each vial contains a tissue sample, and all of it is preserved at minus 160 degrees Celsius. The museum has collected 70,000 of these vials from 40,000 animal species since the Ambrose Monell Cryo Collection opened in 2001.

?There is no other tissue bank that has the overall diversity of life represented here,? said Dr. Amato, director of the museum?s Sackler Institute for Comparative Genomics.

Few visitors to the museum would be likely to want to see the little bar-coded vials. They lack the grandeur of the rearing Barosaurus skeleton in the Roosevelt Rotunda or the 94-foot model of a blue whale. Those can be found in the vast public spaces of the museum?s complex of 26 buildings; the Monell collection sits in a basement room next to the carpentry shop.

The samples in the mist are part of more than 32 million biological specimens and cultural artifacts owned by the museum, only a tiny fraction of which are seen by the public. Their purpose is not to educate and entertain visitors, but to further the museum?s role as one of the world?s leading research institutions, with more than 200 scientists on board. This is the museum?s less-known life, but one that goes back to its founding in 1869.

Anesthetized by visits to museums that have more in common with amusement parks than with research centers, most visitors would be surprised to find that the American Museum of Natural History grants graduate degrees to scientists who work within its walls. Facilities like the Monell collection show how the scientific work undertaken at the museum has broadened over the years: what started with avid collecting, comparing and drawing of specimens, skeletons, feathers and skin now involves DNA sequencing, CT scanning and high-powered computational analysis.

The office of Michael J. Novacek, provost of science at the museum, shows the blending of old and new. The outer wall of the office is curved, tucked into one of the seemingly ancient towers at a corner of the building. On his desk is a big-screen iMac computer displaying a project the museum is engaged in under a multimillion-dollar grant from the National Science Foundation, a database known as the MorphoBank.

The database turns morphology ? the study of the form and structure of organisms to discern the evolutionary relationships among them ? into a social media endeavor that incorporates physical characteristics, genetic expression and environmental factors to more fully describe ?the tree of life,? Dr. Novacek said. As he gazes at a screen filled with information about the anatomy of elephants, he notices that a colleague in England has added an image and filled in accompanying information about it.

?It changes the way people work, it changes the way people collaborate, and it really shoots science ahead,? he said.

And, he added, projects like this mean that the museum?s scientific resources are open to the world. ?It?s as if we took these 32 million things ? specimens, tissues and artifacts ? and opened a window on them,? he said. ?It?s not just on display in an exhibit or sitting in a drawer in the corner of the museum.?

These resources will eventually be accessible to schoolchildren and the general public in formats they can understand and use, he predicted. The hundreds of schoolchildren waiting at a nearby subway stop to enter the museum may not know about the online world of the collections, he said, but ?they will know this.?

For now, he notes, the rich scientific work of the museum goes largely unnoticed outside the scientific community. Dinosaurs, meteorites, the hominid Lucy and the Star of India sapphire get the spotlight. ?In some ways, we?re victims of our own success,? he said. ?The objects are so amazing.?

The museum now looks at its objects differently, with tools that include scanning electron microscopes and a CT scanner that allow magnification and imagery that seem the stuff of science fiction ? or nightmares. Scientists can study the hairs and carapaces of insects, wear patterns on ancient rock tools from Kenya or the inscription on a sword that has fused with its sheath. In the room that houses the CT scanner, a table is crowded with jars containing snakelike creatures preserved in alcohol, ready for their extreme close-ups.

Underlying the museum?s research efforts is computational power that is now beginning to tackle some of the tough problems of sorting through enormous amounts of data for comparison, pattern recognition and analysis. That is the work of Ward Wheeler, whose banks of clustered computers sit in the museum?s basement around a corner from the cryo lab.

Russia activists detained after opposition council meets

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Three prominent opponents of Russian President Vladimir Putin were briefly detained at a protest in central Moscow on Saturday that followed the first meeting of a new opposition body elected in an online vote.

Police arrested politicians Alexei Navalny, Ilya Yashin and Sergei Udaltsov as they tried to take part in a march of several dozen opposition supporters after the inaugural session of the newly-formed Coordination Council.

The opposition group, which met in a Moscow cafe, is tasked with trying to mount a structured challenge to Putin, who assumed the presidency in May for a six-year term.

"They gave us the mandate of trust and made us responsible for coordinating efforts of dozens, hundreds, thousands and millions of people who want positive changes in our country," said Navalny, a popular blogger who collected most of the votes.

While Putin has faced spirited dissent since returning to the presidency for his third term, his critics have so far failed to make significant inroads into his grip on power.

More than 81,000 people took part in the vote, underscoring the scale of the challenge the opposition faces in a country with a population of 142 million people.

After some bickering on Saturday, the new group of 45 leaders agreed to hold the next rally in December to mark the anniversary of the first anti-Putin protests.

Opposition supporters shouted "Shame!" as police ushered Navalny, Yashin and Udaltsov into police vans. The three were released after several hours at the police station and face fines of up to 30,000 roubles (about $1,000) or up to 50 hours of community work for violating public order.

Their arrests followed the detention this month of activist Leonid Razvozzhayev who said he was abducted in Ukraine and tortured.

Kremlin critics in Russia and abroad say the detentions signal a crackdown on dissent since Putin started his new term.

"Reports about new arrests of democratic opposition activists in Moscow. Many signs points at a much harsher regime attitude," Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt wrote in his Twitter microblog.

KREMLIN SCORNFUL

The Kremlin, which has so far ignored the opposition vote, poured scorn on the Council's first session saying that the new leaders were not capable of proposing a constructive agenda or moving the country forward.

"The fact that the opposition is debating how to mark the anniversary of its protests shows that they are looking into the past, not the future," Interfax quoted Aleksei Chesnakov, one of the leaders of pro-Kremlin party United Russia, as saying.

Sergei Mironov, leader of left-leaning Just Russia party which holds 64 seats in the parliament, threatened to expel two of his party members who were elected in the Council and said anti-Kremlin protesters were turning into a sect.

Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov told his party congress that he had warned leftist Udaltsov against siding with "liberals" like Navalny and Yashin who dominate the Council.

Police said the three activists arrested on Saturday were detained for public order violations. It said the protest was not sanctioned by Moscow authorities, as required by law.

While pro-Kremlin television channels barely mentioned the Coordinating Council meeting, they gave plenty of air time to the launch of billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov's new party Civil Platform which pledged to pursue a liberal economic agenda.

Prokhorov, a tycoon whose fortune is estimated by Forbes magazine at $13 billion, said he will now hand over the management of his business assets to partners and focus on politics.

The businessman challenged Putin in the March election, but critics said he had been picked by the Kremlin as a token opposition figure. He collected almost 8 percent of the vote.

"From this day I will only engage in political activity and nothing else," Prokhorov told his supporters. "There is an opinion that here one can either be with the Kremlin or with the Coordination Council. This is not true."

Smart Senior: Senior Health and Fitness: Short Term Rehabilitation

Surgery can change your life. ?Even a minor procedure can leave you feeling like you?ve been run over by a truck.? Going home alone is not always a good plan. Being ill clouds your judgment.?? Dwelling on how miserable you feel will not help you get well. ??Nurturing is wonderful, but older people do not do well on bed rest.? Nutritious meals, good spirits and an exercise program are all needed for recovery. ?Surgery, whether elective or not, includes a period of adjustment. Giving some thought to convalescence and/or rehabilitation is important.?? How are you going to manage when you get home from the hospital?

Rehabilitation can take place in a number of settings but your circumstances will have to dictate which one you choose.? If going home and attending an out-patient program is out of the question, you might need to consider a short term stay at a rehabilitation center.

I found several articles in back issues of Northwest Prime Time (www.NorthwestPrimeTime.com) newsletters.? Several readers wrote to share their experiences in short term rehabilitation programs.? The reviews were positive and their experiences rewarding.? They had to work hard and the expectations were high, but the results were good. ??It is not the place to be if you plan to mope around feeling sorry for yourself.? ??A positive mindset is the key.? ???If the idea of a nursing home scares you to death, you may be reluctant take this step, but rehabilitation is different.? Focus on the words ?short term?.?? Hospitals cannot afford to keep people in acute care beds for as long as it takes to make a complete recovery.?? Hospitals also do not have time to pay attention to the activity needs of older people.? Inactivity is not good for them. ??Older people are prime candidates for intermediate care. ?Intermediate care or rehab was developed to help patients regain strength and mobility. ?Many nursing homes have been upgraded to include rehabilitation units, where the emphasis is on promoting independence.

Rehabilitation is an active process; being waited on is not.? It is easy to become accustomed to having people wait on you. ?Time spent in the hospital feeds into that sense of guilty pleasure. ????If you arrive at a rehab center expecting more of the same you will be in for a rude awakening.? ?You will be tired, but you need to arrive dressed in street clothes and ready to go to work. ??In rehab, a patient works with specialists every day (physical therapists, occupational therapists, nurses, restorative aides or perhaps a speech therapist). Their goal is to teach you how to be independent again.

Make arrangements before entering the hospital if possible.? Tour the facility of your choice and make sure that it is not just another nursing home.? You do not want to be with the general population.?? Staff is not there to wait on you.? They are there to motivate you, provide information, teach skills, listen to you and evaluate your progress.? The reward, of course, is that you will be able to return home and you just might be better than you were before.

Martin, Buccaneers race past Vikings, 36-17

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Traveling to Minnesota to play on Thursday night was supposed to be tough for Tampa Bay.

Rookie Doug Martin ran around the field as if he didn't want to leave.

Martin racked up 214 total yards ? including a career-high 135 rushing ? and two touchdowns, and the Buccaneers romped to a 36-17 victory to hand the Vikings their first home loss this season.

"It was pretty fun. I'm not going to lie," said Martin, who took a screen pass 64 yards for a score, one of three Josh Freeman's three touchdown passes, to give Tampa Bay a 27-10 lead just 1:21 into the second half.

Then Martin, the first-round draft pick from Boise State, capped a drive of more than 9 minutes with a 1-yard muscle into the end zone midway through the fourth quarter to crush the comeback opportunity for Minnesota (5-3).

"It's hard to come from college to the NFL. The speed of the game is definitely increased, and this is a feel thing. You're looking for that rhythm, as a running back, getting comfortable in the offense and having that game-time experience. I'm definitely there, right where I need to be," Martin said.

Adrian Peterson had a season-long 64-yard run for a score that brought the Vikings to 30-17, but his lost fumble in Minnesota territory in the second quarter led directly to a touchdown by the Buccaneers (3-4).

The Bucs, who became just the second visiting team to win on a Thursday night in seven games this season, revived their struggling pass rush with three sacks and flustered Christian Ponder with a heavy dose of blitzes. Ponder finished 19 for 35 for 251 yards, one touchdown and a late interception at the end of a desperation drive.

With a 13-point lead, just trying to keep that clock running as quickly as possible, the Bucs could've gone conservative, but they refused to settle for a punt. Starting at their own 13 with 1:12 left in the third quarter, they plowed their way up the field ? Freeman completed four third-and-long passes ? and finished off the game with Martin's third-and-goal touchdown run with 7:03 remaining.

"Ah, he is definitely an asset to our football team," cornerback Ronde Barber said. "For a young guy to have that kind of vision, to have that kind of patience as a runner, it's pretty impressive."

Freeman went 19 for 36 for 262 yards and, most importantly, no turnovers. Mike Williams had one of the touchdowns and 68 yards on six receptions, and the Bucs held the ball for nearly 38 of the 60 minutes.

With two games apiece against division rivals Chicago and Green Bay plus road trips to Seattle and Houston in the second half of their schedule, the Vikings have quite the challenge waiting for them and their strong start after Thanksgiving.

They faced an important test in this second half, too, after taking the clear advantage they had as the home team in this matchup and handing it over to the Buccaneers.

Their first three possessions were three-and-outs, Ponder started 0 for 5, Jerome Simpson lost a fumble after a short catch near midfield. The Bucs turned that into the second of Connor Barth's three field goals and took a 13-0 lead.

"It's always good to have a fast start, especially playing in an environment like this one. I think it makes things a lot easier down the road," Freeman said.

Harvin finally gave the Vikings some life by grabbing a screen pass for a 32-yard gain and then pivoting to haul in sideline pass over his shoulder for an 18-yard touchdown catch.

But Peterson, who was having no trouble reaching the Tampa Bay secondary with almost every run through the line, had the ball stripped after a spin move by the veteran Barber. The Bucs got the ball at the Minnesota 37, and Williams made a tricky catch in the corner of the end zone for a 3-yard score and a 20-7 lead.

The Buccaneers won only two of new coach Greg Schiano's first six games, but all four of their losses were by seven points or less. So here was their chance to finally enjoy a comfortable victory, setting up a second half that was just as eventful as the first.

Martin caught a screen pass and sped straight through the Vikings, escaping Chad Greenway's tackle and not stopping until he reached the end zone. The Bucs used a three-and-out by the Vikings to add three more points and stretch the lead to 30-10.

Peterson made up for his earlier fumble, though, by matching Martin's big play with one of his own, sprung by a pancake block from Simpson to reach the end zone and bring the Vikings back in it.

The game got even more intense, too, with Jared Allen and Donald Penn trading shoves after one play that left Minnesota's All-Pro with a facemask penalty and a bashed-up nose after Tampa Bay's Pro Bowl left tackle pried Allen's helmet off and got a personal foul of his own. Allen was yelling at Penn after the whistle, pointing at the blood running down onto his teeth and telling him he was coming after him. Allen finished off that drive with a sack, forcing the Buccaneers to punt late in the third quarter.

But Tampa Bay, after blowing a 21-7 lead in losing to New Orleans last week, finished strong this time.

"Guys are getting more comfortable with what we're doing and with each other," said Schiano, the former Rutgers coach. "We're getting better and that's what you're supposed to do."

NOTES: Peterson finished with 123 yards on 15 carries. ... The Bucs improved to just 4-13 in their history on the road in prime-time games. ... Harvin had 90 yards on seven catches.

Jon Stewart: 'I think Romney's leaning Obama'

By Craig Berman, NBC News contributor

Comedy Central

Jon Stewart takes a closer look at the final presidential debate on "The Daily Show."

Admit it. We?re happy the presidential debates are done, right? Even late night talk show hosts seem ready for the page to turn on the news cycle already.

Tuesday marked two weeks to go until Election Day, and in one of the milestones denoting the end of the process, it was also the last round of debate recaps on the ?Daily Show.? Host Jon Stewart was less ranty than he had been after the first two. Instead, he was fascinated by the amount of support Mitt Romney had for President Barack Obama?s foreign policy approach.

After months of the Republican candidates and his party?s blistering attacks on Obama?s decisions, there was a surprising amount of agreement on issues like drones, Afghanistan, and even Iran.

?I think Romney?s leaning Obama,? Stewart said after showing a round of clips where Romney praised the current administration?s policies. ?Apparently Romney?s one of those coveted swing voters.?

Among the issues of agreement: Romney?s desire to dissuade Iran from having a nuclear weapon through peaceful and democratic means. ?Get a haircut, hippie,? Stewart said.

What Romney is offering that he claims is lacking in the current administration is leadership. But with the similarities between the two?s policies, it?s hard for Stewart to see how that would happen.

?Follow me!? Stewart said, in a possible Romney leadership speech. ?I?ll be right behind the president!?

Stephen Colbert watched the debate as well, and noticed the fixation that everyone had with Israel.

?I was playing a drinking game last night where I took a shot of Manischevitz every time someone said Israel, and by the end of the debate I was totally ? diabetic,? Colbert said. Which, given the sweet character of the wine, would not be a surprise.

More than Stewart, Colbert noticed some differences between the candidates. For example, Romney criticized Obama for his Iran policies by noting that Iran is now four years closer to developing a nuclear bomb. Of course, given that time only moves in one direction, so is everyone else -- including Colbert himself.

?Admittedly, I?m still far away ? at the Mentos and diet coke stage,? Colbert said. ?But still.?

With the election tightening and a tie now a possibility, Colbert?s also looking forward to the return of his old friend. ?As we know from history, the rules clearly dictate that in the event of a tie, our next president will be George W. Bush,? he said.

If the Democrats were looking for a Get Out the Vote strategy, that would do it.

But over on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon," the pre-Election Day tension eased.?

The candidates (or at least reasonable facsimiles) put the debates and disagreements behind them in favor of a "hang session."

ITU Telecom World 2012: Our broadband plan is open to investors ...

BY ADEKUNLE ADEKOYA

LAST week, the ITU Telecom World 2012 held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from Sunday 14th to Thursday 18th October at the Duibai International Conference & Exhibition Centre, DICEC. In all, the event featured 95 top-notch speakers that included our Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs Omobola Johnson and the executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Dr Eugene Juwah, and his predecessor, Engr. Ernest Ndukwe, chairman of OpenMedia Group.

Also, 19 countries had pavilions, all of whom are from the Middle East and Africa (MEA) regions, with th exception of Thailand, South Korea, Azerbaijan, and China. For us Nigerians, it was an eye-opening event.

From the very first day, and even before the event, it was clar Nigeria was attending ITU Telecom World 2012 with one sole objective: wooing investors for the nation?s broadband project.

From the Nigeria Day which held at the Nigeria Pavilion, to the dinner at Al-Multaqua, to yet another dinner at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, the message from Nigeria was the same: Investors, come put your money in Nigerian broadband project.

Vice President Namadi Sambo who led the Nigerian delegation to Dubai assured investors of better opportunities to invest in Nigeria. According to him, the Nigerian telecoms sector has all it takes to attract investors, saying ?the investment you make in Nigeria will be the best you have ever made.?

Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, presenting business opportunities of Nigeria to investors at a lunch hosted by the Nigerian government at Al Multaqua in DICEC, said Nigeria had grown its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by additional five per cent, with plans to increase it in the next five years.

She also said investment in the telecoms sector has reached the $25 billion mark in recent times.

Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Dr Eugene Juwah in several presentations during the event took his audiences down memory lane by reminding them of the spectacular growth of GSM voice telephony in Nigeria in just a decade. His words:

?The growth of the telecommunications sector in Nigeria and indeed in sub-sahara Africa in the last ten years has been impressive. In Nigeria for example, teledensity has risen from 0.44% (about 400 thousand active lines) in 2001 to 72% (just over 100 million active) in 2012.

?This growth was achieved due to increased competition in the telecommunication market when the Nigerian communications Commission licensed four (4) new mobile operators to offer mobile services, in addition to the government controlled incumbent, which hitherto accounted for about 95% of all active phone lines in the country.

Nigeria?s delegation at the conference

?Replicating this growth in voice telephony penetration to data penetration requires a whole new strategy as well as learning gained from the rollout of the voice telephony services.

The economic impact of broadband penetration has been found to be quite impressive, World Bank studies show, quite conclusively, that in low and middle-income countries (which many developing countries fall under), every 10% percentage point increase in broadband penetration accelerate economic growth by 1.38 percentage points.

This impact is greater in mid to low income countries than what is obtainable in high _income Countries and equally greater than the impact of any other telecommunication service.

?Notwithstanding the benefits that have been associated with broadband, in developing countries it has to be understood that broadband for all is a medium to long term strategy and the main beneficiaries, in the short term, of the broadband revolution will be businesses.

?Because broadband networks need to generate traffic to lower their costs and increase their profitability, and in light of the fact that broadband is an ecosystem in which users play a central role, stimulating demand is very important as this will provide the means for further expansion of broadband services and increase penetration.

In Africa, broadband penetration is less than 5%, hence there is a huge opportunity for growth and subsequent increase in penetration to un-served and underserved areas and populations. Government or private enterprise alone cannot ensure universal access to broadband services. To make this possible, government and private sector need to collaborate. Several factors will determine how successful broadband rollout in Africa and indeed in other developing countries will be. Some of these factors include:

-Importance of having an overall plan to rollout broadband at a national level in consultation with industry

-Political backing at the very top levels to ensure broadband rollout. This will ensure bureaucratic bottlenecks and access rights are speedily addressed

  • All ministries and government departments must work in a synchronous manner
  • Required spectrum is made available. Especially spectrum that provides the biggest advantage in terms of coverage, capacity and wide adoption across the globe to provide the biggest economies of scale advantages for devices and equipments utilizing these spectrums and the potential to make devices affordable for low income households.
  • The public partnering with the private sector and the use of Universal Service Funds
  • Devising regulatory frameworks that ensures non-discriminatory access to back-haul
  • Technology neutrality: Deploy different technologies as appropriate for different situations.
  • Parallel initiatives to stimulate demand e.g. providing netbooks to primary and secondary school students,? creating awareness on the benefits of broadband services etc.
  • Providing universal access to broadband will require addressing the issues and factors as stated above in addition to addressing the needs of disadvantaged groups in utilising broadband services either by adapting the services to their needs and / or proper device configuration to meet the needs of disadvantaged groups.

In his remarks, Secretary-general of the ITU, Dr Hamadoun Toure commended the Nigerian broadband strategy and lauded the regulator, saying ? some countries desire broadband. Nigeria not only desires broadband, but has a working pland and model to actualize it. For Nigeria to remain at the top of the telecoms growth chart for five years in a row means there is something they are doing right.?

Also on the Nigeria delegation to Dubai were members of the National Asembly, some members of the House of Representatives led by Chairman, House Committee on Communications, Oyetunde Ojo; Governor of Abia State, Theodore Orji and the Governor of Niger State, Dr Mu?azu Babangida Aliyu, and later, Akwa Ibom Governor, Obong Godswill Akpabio.

Should You Use Skype, FaceTime, or Google+ Hangouts?

Nothing can take the place of face-to-face conversation, but the combination of high-speed Internet, webcams, and smartphones makes modern video chatting a close substitute. The technology has come a long way since it popped up as a business tool in the 1990s and evolved into consumer software in the past decade. Nearly every modern smartphone and laptop comes ready for video chatting, but that ubiquity can be tricky to navigate because features differ across software, and applications aren't necessarily compatible with each other and with all hardware. When used to its full potential, though, videoconferencing is a cheap and effective way to see and hear friends who live far away, join in with the family if you can't make it home for the holidays, or virtually kiss your kids goodnight when you're away on a business trip.

Net Full of Options

Given the amount of money AT&T made for so long on long-distance calling, it's surprising how many modern companies are lining up to offer video calls to anywhere in the world for free; by sending calls over the Internet, these services circumvent phone companies altogether. Yet here we are, with dozens of ways to send our voices and faces over the Web. In fact, it's the very volume of incompatible options that makes the process far more confusing than it needs to be. The videoconferencing service you end up using will depend on the device you connect with and the devices owned by those whom you wish to contact. If you both have the same kind of smartphone, a built-in app might be all you need. But if one of you is on a computer and the other is on a video-game console, you'll probably need to find something a bit more robust.

Skype

You know a technology has caught on when it becomes a verb. Skype is the de facto way to connect when you're unsure of the equipment of the people to whom you're connecting. The powerful videoconferencing application runs on just about anything with an Internet connection, including iOS and Android devices, Macs and PCs, and even some televisions. That versatility, plus integration with Facebook and Outlook (Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011), means a growing base of users and ways to access the service. To prevent platforms from coming between friends and family, Skype allows calls between various kinds of devices. A computer can connect to a smartphone, another computer, or a landline?though only calls made entirely over the Internet are free, and for more than two people to video-chat, at least one person needs a $4.99-per-month Skype Premium subscription, which allows up to 25 participants at once.

Skype's multiplatform compatibility certainly lowers the barrier to participation, but the service sometimes suffers from shoddy video quality, especially when relying on cellular connections rather than more stable broadband ones. Smartphone-to-smartphone Skype calls are passable, but the images often turn pixelated and blurry, and calls that link Skype accounts to Facebook chat users frequently lag. According to Jim Forbes, a management consultant for the technology consulting firm Ibex Group, poor video quality on Facebook likely comes from the company's rush to try to keep up with Google. So to get the most from the service, stick to computer-to-computer calls using Skype's desktop software, and make sure you have a reliable, high-bandwidth Internet connection.

Google+ Hangouts

Google offers video chatting on computers and mobile devices with front-facing cameras via Google+ Hangouts, a feature that, like Skype on Facebook, is videoconferencing via social network. Hangouts requires a Google+ account and, to work directly in a computer browser, a video plug-in. The Google+ mobile app can also bridge the technological divide by letting Android and iPhone users digitally hang out. The video quality is what you would expect from Google: solid and clean, with potential for goofy fun, such as wearing virtual pirate hats. And unlike Skype, Google+ Hangouts is completely free and allows up to 10 participants in a call.

Apple FaceTime

Apple restricts its two video-chat services to Apple devices only. The company's computers come with Messages, built for connecting to as many as three other computers, and FaceTime, which can connect to one other Mac or iOS device. Apple designed FaceTime for the iPhone, and that's where it works best (it's preinstalled on any iDevice with a front-facing camera). To make a call, just open the desired contact and tap the FaceTime button.

While early versions of FaceTime required a Wi-Fi connection, iOS recently caught up with Android and now allows FaceTime over 3G too (though sound and video quality, which are strong over Wi-Fi, may suffer because of already overburdened networks). The convenience of the service makes it a good choice for an Apple-friendly family, but if there's already a PC?Mac rift in your clan, FaceTime won't help.

For video chatting without a big-company name, other options abound. Netconference provides video chatting and cloud-based storage for easy document sharing, and ooVoo and Tango are free services that can work over 3G on both Android and iOS devices. But as with all 3G services?except on AT&T's Mobile Share plans, which provide FaceTime calls for free?they can quickly eat into cellular data plans; a 20-minute phone call uses more than 60 MB.

Big-Screen Video Chat

You don't have to squint at a smartphone or squeeze the whole family around a laptop to video-chat. New Skype-ready HDTVs from Panasonic, LG, Samsung, and other companies connect via USB to external video cameras such as the FreeTalk Conference HD ($130), which comes in models made for Sharp, Toshiba, Panasonic, and Elite TVs.

You can also use the TV you already have by connecting it to your computer with an S-video, a VGA, or an HDMI cable (you'll still need to look at your computer's camera). If you have a cumbersome desktop computer, you may be better off connecting a Skype-friendly Blu-ray player, such as the Sony 3D Blu-ray Disc Player ($249), to a TV and a USB webcam. Or you can opt for an all-in-one device, such as Logitech TV Cam HD, a $200 set-top device that runs Skype software and works on nearly any HDMI-equipped TV.

Video-game systems are another option. When connected to Microsoft's Kinect camera or Xbox Live Vision camera (and with a $60-per-year Xbox Live Gold membership), the Xbox allows chat between two consoles or between a console and a computer via Windows Live Messenger. Nintendo's recently released Wii U GamePad also offers video chatting.

Though there are lots of ways to connect digitally, computer-to-computer connections remain the dominant method for two reasons: simplicity and compatibility. The move toward smarter TVs may change that, but it hasn't yet. So for a successful digital family gathering over the holidays, stick with the well-established tech and pull a laptop up to the table.

Few Takers for India's Auction of Mobile Spectrum

?India's auction of mobile spectrum has not attracted new foreign investors, reflecting growing uncertainty about investment policies in the country and the growth potential of its mobile market.?

Telenor and the Indian joint venture of NTT DoCoMo, which both lost 2G licenses as a result of aSupreme Court decision in February, are participating in the bidding for new licenses.

But the Indian joint venture of Russia's Sistema said it would stay away from the auction, and instead try to recover in court the licenses it lost. The recommended spectrum prices also make the business case unviable, Sistema Shyam TeleServices said in a statement. Etisalat, another company that lost its licenses, was also not a participant by Friday, the last day for applications.

The Supreme Court ordered 122 licenses canceled in February, and the spectrum thus freed to be auctioned again, after it ruled that the allocation of licenses in 2008 had been manipulated by business interests. The Indian joint ventures of foreign companies such as Etisalat, NTT DoCoMo, Telenor, and Sistema lost licenses as a result. Some of these foreign companies had invested in Indian mobile startups that had bagged the licenses.

The lukewarm response to the auction can be put down to investors' concerns after the country's flip-flops on investment policy in a number of areas, as well as the saturation of the Indian mobile market, said Kamlesh Bhatia, research director at Gartner.?

At this point only companies that have the ability to differentiate significantly and add value in the mobile services business will invest in the country, Bhatia said. Some of the companies that lost licenses probably intend to protect their existing investments in network and other infrastructure by acquiring spectrum again, he added.

Two top Indian companies with interests in the mobile services business, Reliance Communications and Reliance Industries, also stayed away from the auction, though India's largest mobile operator Bharti Airtel is a participant, according to records of India's Department of Telecommunications.?

The spectrum that is being auctioned is in the 800MHz and 1800MHz bands. Six companies are bidding in the auction which is scheduled for the middle of next month.

Companies that have stayed away may later try to get back to the market by acquisitions, Bhatia said. Reliance Industries, which stayed away from a broadband wireless auction in June last year, soon after?acquired?Infotel Broadband Services which won licenses for broadband wireless services in India

Great Self Improvement Tips For Increased Success - ProjectPB ...

If you want to change but don?t know how, you?ve come to the right place. With a positive outlook and a little research on your part, you can become prepared to create and embark upon your own self improvement plan, tailored just for your needs.

Seek out other like-minded individuals. Not only will this strengthen your resolve and reinforce positive attitudes in yourself, but it will also allow you a break from people who are toxic that badmouth your goals and dreams at every turn.

TIP! You need to decide what type of lifestyle would suit you best, then you can set goals that can realistically be attained. If you work on your weaknesses, you can better yourself.

In your self improvement journey, there is one thing that you must do. Choose to take real action, everyday, towards your goals and dreams, instead of just watching others from the sidelines. Active participation in everyday matters is the only way to be alive in the world.

The goals that you have set in your personal development plan should be clearly defined to show the steps toward achievement of success. If there are specific goals present, it will be easier to figure out the path that you should take to meet them. This will make it simpler to overcome obstacles and you will be able to enjoy success.

Learn things that people that are successful are doing; use them in your own life. Begin with some basic, easy habits, and remember to practice them until it becomes second nature. It is said that any new habit can be achieved in 21 days, so keep at it.

TIP! A great personal development tip is to always use love to fuel your faith. You can not have faith without love.

Your body?s health affects your mind?s health. Eat right, avoiding high fat foods and sugar, and get plenty of exercise. If you have a strong body, you will have a strong mind.

Are you causing yourself unnecessary stress? Learn how to deal with your stress, and always analyze a situation carefully. It?s always possible to fix any mistake you have made, or manage a way to deal with it. When you start feeling anxious about a situation, focus on the positive things, not the negative ones.

If you want to make progress in the area of personal development, you need to declare lowliness. Realizing your place in the big scheme of things is freeing. You will begin to understand that there are many ways to improve. Once you adopt this mindset, you will be more open-minded and receptive to new knowledge, which will lead to self-improvement.

TIP! Stress can be the opposite of happiness a lot of the time. Stress causes both physical and mental damage that increases in severity the longer we experience it.

A good self improvement plan has a physical health component. A healthy lifestyle includes working out and watching what kind of food you eat, and you must be able to acquire the characteristic of being able to remain motivated to do it. Good health is necessary for you to be able to focus on other things.

Self discipline is a requirement for successful self improvement. Learn to develop a strong sense of self control. Learn to resist the desires to overindulge yourself in food, drink, and other physical desires. By having restraint and self-control, you?ll have the ability to prevent these harmful habits from harming your body and mind.

Sexual capital is a new thing that is being learned about, and it is very crucial to start developing yourself. This doesn?t mean people use sex explicitly to get what they want; it means using personal charm instead. Not everyone has good social skills, but these can help you go farther in all aspects of your life.

TIP! Eliminate unnecessary stress from your daily life. Simply over-reacting when things go wrong only causes more stress.

Therapy is a good way to work through serious issues. Books can be very helpful to help you understand your problems, but they tend to lack the insight and knowledge which a therapist can give you. Sometimes, the drive to succeed can be stimulated by something as simple as a frank, honest discussion and some helpful advice. Books can?t talk back like a trained professional, after all.

Instead of endlessly gloating about your own achievements, why not ask another person to share a story of personal victory? Respectful listening to the successes of others can help you to gain insight into your own inner life as well as allowing you to connect with others in a meaningful way.

Pick a single key aspect of your life that needs changing, and work on it. You may want to improve multiple aspects of yourself, but keeping a narrow focus makes it easier to define and achieve your goals. Such a process also facilitates lasting improvements to your attitude, because habits that are acquired gradually and deliberately are more likely to be permanent.

TIP! See what is in the way between your success and you. For a lot of people, this is very hard to do.

Pick out what you wish to do in life and go do it. You?ll never have the life you want if all you do is sit around in your armchair and dream about it. Do something about your dreams and you will see them come true.

Your personal development goals will often include improving and incorporating new healthy habits into your life. It?s a well-known fact that a healthy body is a happy body. You can think more clearly, and even save time and money, by not having to go to the doctor on a regular basis. In other words, better health is one of the most gratifying goals you can achieve.

People who are looking for personal development methods often make the mistake of setting goals that are too vague or too hard to target. Create a specific goal for yourself. Having a specific goal will help you to get better results.

TIP! Anytime and anywhere, be ready for when your ideas strike. Carry paper and a pen around with you.

Be on the lookout for new challenges all the time. New challenges open new possibilities for you. You can pick up some new skills during the learning process. You might even make yourself a role model for others. Unique challenges can help to yield more satisfaction down the road.

Use your time efficiently so you can get more done in a shorter amount of time. One effective way to work more efficiently is to schedule more regular break times. Taking breaks is not a waste of time. It will help you stay relaxed and focused on what you need to accomplish.

Is it hard for you to meet that special someone? Think about searching online. Almost half of all couples meet online. Like those cheesy eHarmony commercials say, the love of your life could be just a click away. Both websites have positives and negatives.

TIP! Personal development begins when you identify what you value the most. Therefore, it is extremely important that this is a priority in your life.

You should now have a better idea how to maintain an optimistic outlook and plan. Apply this information to your life and stay willing to learn new things as they come along; this is the key to a lifetime of personal growth.

No. 3 Florida lived up to its surprising BCS ranking by thrashing a South Carolina team that appeared to be a contender in the SEC.

The Gamecocks gave LSU almost all it could handle in Death Valley last week, and figured to follow up with a good showing in The Swamp.

Instead, Loucheiz Purifoy knocked the ball out of South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw's hands on the first play, and Florida punched it in to start a 44-11 rout in Gainesville.

Jeff Driskel threw four touchdown passes ? three of them after turnovers ? and the Gators matched their win total from last season.

Florida avenged consecutive losses to the Gamecocks, including one a couple of years ago that ended with Steve Spurrier and his players celebrating a division title on the Gators' home field.

Florida managed just 29 yards and two first downs in the first half against South Carolina (6-2, 4-2). But the Gators led 21-6 thanks to three turnovers and never looked back.

Florida's latest whatever-it-takes win kept coach Will Muschamp's team undefeated and put it on the cusp of the Southeastern Conference's Eastern Division title. The Gators can clinch a spot in the SEC championship game by beating No. 13 Georgia next week.

The Gators finished 7-6 last season, barely avoiding the program's first losing season since 1979. The struggles had outsiders questioning whether Muschamp could get them back to national prominence.

Florida's record says he has, even if the stat sheet leaves doubts.

The Gamecocks actually outgained the Gators, 193-182, in a low-wattage affair everywhere but on the scoreboard. The Gators can use eye-popping result. Oregon is close behind the Gators in the BCS rankings and actually No. 2 in The Associated Press Top 25, which doesn't count in the BCS, and in the coaches' poll, which does.

The Ducks already posted a comprehensive victory at Arizona State on Thursday night, in which they reached 43 points in 20 minutes, then coasted to a 43-21 win over the Sun Devils.

___

No. 1 ALABAMA 44, TENNESSEE 13

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Alabama may have a championship-caliber offense to go with its best-in-the-nation defense.

A.J. McCarron tossed four touchdown passes and threw for a career-high 306 yards as the top-ranked Crimson Tide trounced Tennessee at Neyland Stadium. Freshman receiver Amari Cooper caught seven passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns, while freshman running back T.J. Yeldon ran for 129 yards and two scored on 15 carries.

Tyler Bray went 13 of 27 for 184 yards with two interceptions and no touchdown passes for Tennessee. The Volunteers had scored at least 31 points in each of their first six games, but they couldn't muster much offense against an Alabama team that entered leading the country in total defense, scoring defense, run defense and pass efficiency defense.

Tennessee (3-4, 0-4 SEC) has lost 11 of its last 12 SEC games and is 0-14 against the Top 25 since Derek Dooley took over the program in 2010.

More than one-third of the 102,455 fans were cheering for Alabama (7-0, 4-0). By the midway point of the fourth quarter, many of the Tennessee fans already had headed to the parking lot.

___

No. 4 KANSAS STATE 55, NO. 17 WEST VIRGINIA 14

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) ? Collin Klein ran for four touchdowns and threw three TD passes as Kansas State got little resistance from West Virginia in an easy victory that turned a matchup of Heisman Trophy contenders into a campaign ad for the Wildcats' quarterback.

Klein was 19 of 21 for a career-high 323 yards and added 41 yards rushing for the Wildcats (7-0, 4-0 Big 12), the only unbeaten team in the conference.

It was no surprise the Mountaineers (5-2, 2-2) were awful on defense ? it's been that way all season. For the second straight game, though, Geno Smith and the offense did nothing to keep it close.

Smith followed up a clunker at Texas Tech last week with an even worse game, throwing his first two interceptions of the season and finishing 21 of 32 for 143 yards. The senior has gone from Heisman front-runner to long shot in two weeks.

Kansas State scored on its first eight possessions, making it 52-7 with 2:25 left in the third quarter when Klein hit Tyler Lockett over the middle for a 20-yard score.

___

No. 5 NOTRE DAME 17, BRIGHAM YOUNG 14

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) ? Theo Riddick pounded his way for a career-high 143 yards and Cierre Wood added 114 yards.

Riddick had runs of 55 and 27, the two longest rushes of his career, to pace Notre Dame (7-0), which is off to its best start in a decade and has a big game ahead against No. 10 Oklahoma next week. The Cougars (4-4) fell to 0-3 on the road as they surrendered a season-high 270 yards rushing.

Backup quarterback Tommy Rees, starting in place of injured Everett Golson, completed 6 of 7 passes in the first quarter for 86 yards and a touchdown, throwing four of those to Tyler Eifert. But Rees missed his next seven passes and the Irish attempted only three passes in the second half.

Rees' only completion of the second half was a 31-yard pass to TJ Jones with a little more than a minute left in the third quarter. Riddick ran the ball up the middle for 19 yards to the BYU 5. Three plays later, George Atkinson III scored on an end around, cutting inside BYU safety Joe Sampson for a touchdown and the final margin.

___

No. 6 LSU 24, No. 20 TEXAS A&M 19

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) ? Jeremy Hill rushed for a career-high 127 yards and a touchdown, and the sixth-ranked Tigers rallied from an early deficit.

Michael Ford also had a touchdown run and Zach Mettenberger threw a TD pass to Kadron Boone for the Tigers (7-1, 3-1 Southeastern Conference), who scored 21 points off four Texas A&M turnovers.

A&M (5-2, 2-2) outplayed the Tigers for much of the first half and led 12-0, LSU's largest deficit since the national championship game against Alabama in January. But the Aggies gave away two costly turnovers just before halftime, and Boone's diving catch in the end zone with 11 seconds left put LSU up 14-12 at the break. Hill finished off A&M with a 47-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Johnny Manziel, A&M's dual-threat redshirt freshman quarterback, completed 29 of 56 passes for 276 yards, but threw three interceptions and was sacked three times. He was the SEC's leading rusher coming into the game and was held to 27 yards on 17 carries.

___

No. 7 OHIO STATE 29, PURDUE 22, OT

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Backup Kenny Guiton came off the bench in relief of injured Braxton Miller to lead touchdown drives in the final minute of regulation and Carlos Hyde scored on a 1-yard run in in overtime.

Purdue (3-4, 0-3 Big Ten) led 22-14 when Ohio State got the ball with just 47 seconds left in regulation. Guiton, inserted when Miller went out with an undisclosed injury, hit Chris Fields on a 2-yard touchdown pass with 3 seconds remaining. Guiton then found freshman Jeff Heuerman on the conversion pass to tie it at 22.

Hyde scored on a short plunge for Ohio State (8-0, 4-0) before Purdue's Caleb TerBush, who had two TD passes, misfired on four passes in the overtime.

Purdue had earlier scored on TerBush TD passes of 83 yards to Akeem Shavers ? on the first offensive play of the game ? and 31 yards to Gary Bush in the third quarter, along with Akeem Hunt's 100-yard kickoff return. The Boilermakers also picked up a safety when Ohio State was called for an illegal block in the end zone in the fourth quarter.

Miller completed 9 of 20 passes for 113 yards with an interception and ran for 47 yards on 12 carries before leaving the game on the next-to-last play of the third quarter.

___

No. 8 OREGON STATE 21, UTAH 7

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) ? Oregon State's defense helped out when quarterback Cody Vaz struggled in the rain, and the undefeated Beavers beat Utah for their best start in more than a century.

Vaz made his debut last weekend as the starter in place of injured Sean Mannion and threw for three touchdowns against BYU to earn Pac-12 player of the week honors. This time, he passed for 174 yards against the Utes. But the Beavers' defense had an interception and a fumble recovery that led to two first-half touchdown runs by Storm Woods.

Woods had all three TDs for Oregon State (6-0, 4-0 Pac-12), which hadn't opened 6-0 since 1907, when the school was the Oregon Agricultural College. The victory also meant bowl eligibility for the Beavers, who went 3-9 last season and were picked to finish last in the Pac-12 North this year.

Freshman Travis Wilson threw for 172 yards and a touchdown for Utah (2-5, 0-4), which began conference play with four consecutive losses for the second straight season.

___

No. 10 OKLAHOMA 52, KANSAS 7

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) ? Landry Jones threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns, and Oklahoma scored on a kickoff return and a punt return in the same game for the first time in school history.

Justin Brown made up for a lost fumble on his previous punt return by running his next chance back 90 yards and diving at the pylon for the score. Roy Finch then opened the second half with a 100-yard runback to stretch the lead to 45-0.

The Brown-Finch combo marked the first time the Sooners (5-1, 3-1 Big 12) have had two plays at least 90 yards long in the same game.

James Sims scored on a shutout-preventing touchdown run in the fourth quarter for Kansas (1-6, 0-4), which never presented much of a challenge while losing its 16th straight conference game and 27th out of the last 28.

The Sooners' first-team defense hasn't given up a point in two straight weeks heading into next Saturday night's showdown against No. 5 Notre Dame on Owen Field.

Jones and the first-team offense scored on their first six possessions.

___

No. 11 USC 50, COLORADO 6

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Matt Barkley threw for 298 yards and six touchdowns while setting Southern California's career record for TD passes, and Robert Woods set a pair of school marks himself.

Barkley and Woods climbed atop the Trojans' record books during the most prolific day of their three-year partnership at USC (6-1, 4-1 Pac-12), connecting on scoring throws of 39, 29, 17 and 3 yards in the first 35 minutes against hapless Colorado (1-6, 1-3).

That gave Woods a school record for TD receptions in a single game.

Barkley hit Woods with his 100th career touchdown pass in the second quarter to surpass Matt Leinart's USC and conference records. Woods passed Dwayne Jarrett on USC's career receptions list a few minutes later with his 217th career catch, going 17 yards for another TD.

USC has won four straight since its only loss, at Stanford.

Barkley tied his own single-game USC mark for TD passes while going 19 for 20 to break Rick Neuheisel's conference record for completion percentage in a game with at least 20 passes. Barkley also hit Marqise Lee and Xavier Grimble for scores, and his only incompletion was a drop by Curtis McNeal.

Woods finished with eight catches for 132 yards. Lee had six catches for 103 yards.

No. 12 FLORIDA STATE 33, MIAMI 20

MIAMI (AP) ? EJ Manuel threw for 229 yards, Devonta Freeman ran for a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns and Florida State overcame a shaky start to beat Miami, the Seminoles' third straight win over their archrival.

Manuel completed 21 of 31 passes for Florida State (7-1, 4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), which won despite 12 penalties and five fumbles, two of them lost. Dustin Hopkins kicked four field goals and James Wilder added a touchdown run.

Stephen Morris, playing a week after spraining his left ankle, started and threw for 223 yards and a late touchdown for Miami (4-4, 3-2), which has lost three straight but controls its Coastal Division destiny.

Mike James had a touchdown run for the Hurricanes, who lost freshman Duke Johnson in the second half with an undisclosed injury.

Miami finished with 29 yards rushing on 21 attempts.

The win put the Seminoles a half-game ahead of Clemson in the ACC's Atlantic Division, which has four teams with one loss in league play.

No. 13 GEORGIA 29, KENTUCKY 24

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) ? Aaron Murray threw four touchdown passes to rally Georgia over stubborn Kentucky.

The junior finished 30 of 38 for 427 yards as the Bulldogs (6-1, 4-1 SEC) stayed within reach of East-leading Florida entering next week's showdown against the unbeaten Gators in Jacksonville, Fla.

Georgia, coming off a bye following a 35-7 loss at South Carolina, had to work hard to get past Kentucky (1-7, 0-5), which has lost six in a row. Despite outgaining the Wildcats 504-329, the Bulldogs trailed three times and needed Murray's fourth TD for a cushion.

Two of Murray's scores were to Tavarres King, who had nine receptions for 188 yards ? included a 66-yard TD. Arthur Lynch and Chris Conley also caught TDs for the Bulldogs.

Kentucky senior Morgan Newton had a hand in all the Wildcats' scores, running and passing for a touchdown and leading a field-goal drive. He played the entire second half in place of freshman Jalen Whitlow, who left with a migraine.

No. 14 CLEMSON 38, VIRGINIA TECH 17

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) ? Tajh Boyd ran for two touchdowns and passed for another and Jonathan Meeks had a 74-yard interception return score and the Tigers beat the Hokies for the third straight time.

Andre Ellington had a 12-yard touchdown run and 96 yards for the Tigers (6-1, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), who relied on their much-maligned defense to bail them out of this one.

Clemson finished with three interceptions and twice stopped fourth downs to end drives by the Hokies (4-4, 2-2). Logan Thomas passed for 207 yards and ran for 99, accounting for two Virginia Tech touchdowns. He was continually harassed by the Tigers and threw two picks.

Boyd was 12 of 21 for 160 yards, 131 fewer than he averaged coming in.

Clemson tied a school record with its 11th straight home victory, something it had done twice before from 1937-42 and 1989-91. To match the mark this time, the Tigers had to count on their usually unreliable defense as their high-flying offense was largely grounded.

The Hokies put up 406 yards, but that's still under the 445 a game Clemson had been allowing. Tigers defenders turned the tide early, halting Michael Holmes on third and fourth downs in the opening quarter to end the Hokies' 15-play drive on Clemson's 18.

No. 16 LOUISVILLE 27, SOUTH FLORIDA 25

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) ? Louisville's perfect start appeared to be over before Teddy Bridgewater came up with one more big play.

Bridgewater threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Eli Rogers with 1:35 left, and the 16th-ranked Cardinals were off to their best opening to a season since 2006.

Louisville (7-0, 2-0 Big East) rallied after yielding 15 straight points to South Florida and a season-high 197 yards rushing.

B.J. Daniels threw three TD passes in the second half, the last one putting South Florida ahead 25-21 with 3:09 left. The Bulls had one last chance for the win, but Adrian Bushell intercepted Daniels' last-gasp throw as time ran out, well short of the end zone.

South Florida (2-5, 0-3) has dropped five straight games. It has just one win in its last 12 conference games dating to last season.

Louisville finished with four sacks and a big goal-line stand late in the third quarter. Bridgewater was 21 of 25 for 256 yards and two TDs, and the sophomore quarterback also led the Cardinals with 74 yards rushing on 10 carries.

No. 18 TEXAS TECH 56, TCU 53, 3OT

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) ? Seth Doege tossed a touchdown pass in each of the three overtime periods, giving him seven for the game and helping Texas Tech beat TCU after blowing a late 10-point lead.

The game-winning pass was an 8-yarder to Alex Torres, which came four plays after freshman Jaden Oberkrom's Big 12-record sixth field goal had put TCU ahead. Both teams scored touchdowns in the first two overtime periods.

TCU (5-2, 2-2), the Big 12 newcomer, has lost consecutive home games in a single season for the first time since it dropped its final two home games of 1998. Two weeks ago, the Horned Frogs lost their first Big 12 home game to Iowa State.

Doege hit Torres in the middle of the end zone to end the game with the most combined points ever for Texas Tech, and the second-most for TCU. He threw a 6-yard TD pass to Eric Ward in the first overtime, and a 25-yarder to Jakeem Grant on the first play of the second extra period.

Doege completed 30 of 42 passes for 318 yards and Texas Tech (6-1, 3-1) became bowl eligible a year after its first losing season since 1992. The Red Raiders were coming off an impressive 49-14 victory over then-No. 5 West Virginia.

___

No. 19 RUTGERS 35, TEMPLE 10

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Gary Nova threw four touchdown passes in the second half to keep Rutgers undefeated.

Jawan Jamison had 114 yards rushing and 81 receiving, Nova threw for 232 yards, and the Scarlet Knights (7-0, 4-0 Big East) rallied from a 10-0 halftime deficit in their first game against Temple (3-3, 2-1) since the Owls were kicked out of the conference in 2004.

Held to just 110 total yards in the first 30 minutes, Rutgers was unstoppable in the second half. The Scarlet Knights scored on their first four possessions and racked up 271 yards.

A crowd of 35,145 was the third-largest for Temple at Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles. There were plenty of red-clad Scarlet Knights' fans who made the trip down the New Jersey Turnpike.

___

TOLEDO 29, NO. 21 CINCINNATI 23

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) ? Bernard Reedy scored on a 91-yard kickoff return and Toledo handed Cincinnati its first loss of the season.

Cincinnati (5-1) led just once, late in the third quarter, but Reedy quickly erased the deficit with his third special teams touchdown in three weeks, putting Toledo up 26-20.

Toledo's defense stifled Bearcats quarterback Munchie Legaux and his high-powered offense, which had been averaging 37 points per game.

Cincinnati had one last chance, getting the ball with 42 seconds left. But Legaux's second interception of the game ended any hope for the Bearcats.

Toledo's Jermaine Robinson returned Legaux's first interception for a 75-yard touchdown in the first half.

The Rockets (6-1) have won six straight after a season-opening loss at Arizona.

___

No. 22 STANFORD 21, CALIFORNIA 3

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) ? Stepfan Taylor ran for a career-high 189 yards and one touchdown, and No. 22 Stanford got its third straight Big Game victory.

In the 115th meeting between the Bay Area schools and the first at remodeled Memorial Stadium, the sunny and serene Strawberry Canyon setting might have been Cal's best highlight. The Cardinal outgained the Golden Bears 475 to 217 yards, outrushed Cal 252 to 3 yards and never lost its grip on the coveted Stanford Axe.

Stanford's Josh Nunes completed 16 of 31 passes for 214 yards and a touchdown. He also fumbled and threw an interception late in the fourth quarter with the game well out of reach.

Cal (3-5, 2-3) had not scored so few points in the Big Game since losing 10-3 in 1998. The Bears fumbled three times ? losing two of them ? and had another interception of Nunes wiped out by a penalty.

___

NO. 23 MICHIGAN 12, MICHIGAN STATE 10

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) ? Brendan Gibbons made a 38-yard field goal with 5 seconds left, helping the Wolverines (5-2, 3-0 Big Ten) beat the Spartans (4-4, 1-3) for the first time since 2007 to avoid a school-record, five-game losing streak in the series.

Denard Robinson threw a 20-yard pass to Drew Dileo to set up the game-winning kick.

Michigan State's Dan Conroy made a go-ahead field goal with 5:48 left after a fake punt kept the drive alive. The Spartans forced the Wolverines to punt from midfield after going ahead, but couldn't stop them when it mattered most in the final minute.

It was the 900th win for Michigan, college football's winningest program.

Michigan's players sprinted toward the student section to celebrate after the win, and the fans in turn, spilled out onto the field, covering so much of it that Michigan State's marching band walked off the field without playing a note of its planned postgame performance.

Robinson was 14 of 29 for 163 yards with an interception, a harmless turnover on an up-for-grabs pass at the end of the first half, and ran for 96 yards on 20 carries.

___

No. 24 BOISE STATE 32, UNLV 7

BOISE, Idaho (AP) ? D.J Harper rushed for two touchdowns and a dominating defense added one of their own to help the Broncos to their sixth straight win since an opening loss at Michigan State.

Harper scored on a 10-yard run in the first quarter then again late in the third quarter from 1-yard out to put Boise State (6-1, 3-0 Mountain West) up 32-0 at the time.

Harper rushed for 59 yards on 12 carries and quarterback Joe Southwick was 22 of 30 for 243 yards before heading to the sideline in the third quarter. Matt Miller led Boise State with five catches for 53 yards.

Boise State, in a tie for first place with Nevada, rolled up 394 total yards on offense, but it was another outstanding performance by the defense, one of the best in the nation at forcing turnovers, that helped put the game out of reach for UNLV (1-7, 1-2) early.
